CT-111 Introduction to Communication Systems: Spring 2018, DA-IICT

Course Description

An introductory course on the communication systems with special focus on digital communication systems.

  • Course Objectives:

    • understand the basic principles of telecommunications, appreciate what a basic telecommunication system is, why it is required and its fundamental concepts, appreciate and become familiar with various modern communication systems.

    • articulate the basic blocks of a typical communication system, identify the most common types of transmission media, etc.

    • Perform experiments with some of the basic sub-systems used for telecommunication, measure some of the parameters and validate various concepts.

    • Simulate certain components of a telecommunication system and observe some of the relevant parameters using PSpice, Python and Matlab.

    • Know details of the telecommunication systems like the telephone, optical fiber communication, wireless and mobile communication, and satellite communication systems.

  • Course Content:

    • Overview and importance of designing communication systems

    • Basic problems and constraints in a communication system design such as signal to noise ratio or SNR and bandwidth (BW).

    • Measures of information and limits on the design of a communication link

    • Block diagram of a communication system (Transmitter, Receiver and Channel)

    • Basic Telecommunications Concepts: Analog versus Digital Signals, Baseband and Bandpass Communication Systems

    • Analog Modulation: Amplitude, Frequency and Phase Modulation, Demodulator Designs

    • Digital Modulation: Advantages, various digital modulation schemes and demodulator designs

    • Communication Receivers: An Introduction Tuned Radio Receivers, The Super heterodyne Receiver, Frequency Conversion, Intermediate Frequency Selection and Images, Typical Receiver Circuits, FM Receiver.

    • Introduction to Antennas, Transmission line Fundamentals, Types of Transmission Lines, Basic Antenna Operation, Isotropic Radiator.

    • The Basic Telephone System: Basic Telephone System, Numbering and Dialling, Switching and Types of Switching, Telephone Line (local loop) signalling, Local Exchange and its organisation.

    • Introduction to Optical Fibre Communication: Optical Fibre versus Metallic Cable, Types of Optical Fibres, Propagation of Light through Optical Fibre, Fibre Attenuation and Dispersion, Optical Transmitters and Receivers, Optical Fibre Communication System,Applications, Advantages and Limitations.

    • Introduction to Wireless and Mobile Communication: Wireless and Mobile Communication Basics, Radio wave Propagation, Wireless Terminology, Introduction to Wireless technologies.

    • Introduction to Satellite Communication: Satellite Orbits, Geostationary Satellites, Satellite Communication Systems, Satellite System Link Models (Up-Link and Down-Link), Transponder, Earth Stations, Applications Overview.
